Preventative Bird Control
Bird control can be difficult to achieve, short of
covering your own building in netting! However, both
prior to and after your Elder's bird control expert
visit, there are steps that can reduce the attractiveness
of your building to birds and naturally encourage them
to move elsewhere.
Elders can help you with many of these bird control
strategies, while some can be completed yourself, and
others may require the assistance of a certified building
professional. Ask your Elders bird
control expert, either when you get your FREE
quote or at your bird
control appointment.
Roosting prevention
- Openings to steeples, vents, eaves and lofts accessible
to birds
must be covered with ½ inch wire mesh.
- Nest removal needs to be conducted in conjunction
with electronic bird deterrents
- Birds prefer to roost on level surfaces; in extreme
cases you can install sheet metal or mesh to create
a steeper slope on your rooves
- Bird spikes or piano wire installed on birds' landing
strips can help deter them. The spikes do not hurt the
birds; their keen eyesight means they do not accidentally
land on them.
We can also use products such as 'Bird Gel', a sticky
substance applied with a caulking gun to areas of your
building that aren't used by people, as well as the
trees surrounding your property. The birds
hate the sticky substance on their feet, and will actively
avoid your property.
How You Can Help
If you have an Elders bird control professional coming
out to help remove and deter the birds from your property,
you can help ensure the effectiveness and longevity
of our bird control method by:
- Remove sources of food and water for the birds by
ensuring outdoor garbage bins are tightly closed, removing
standing water that birds can drink and ensuring that
(if you have a hospitality business) food isn't left
outside.
- Consider removing fruit or nut trees from your property
to help with bird control; at the very least, ensure
they are netted before they go into flower. " Ensuring
that any nests you see are removed from the property
as soon as possible. Nesting birds will do everything
in their power to return to your property.
- Don't attempt to harm or trap the birds yourself;
council and state regulations vary across Australia.
In the long term, deterrents like removing roosting
places, food and water are the most effective methods
of bird control. Many visual and auditory scarers are
temporary solutions at best; removing the reasons that
birds are attracted to your property in the first place
is the smartest move.
